FAQS
-
Repro Day is happening at King’s Rock Farm (Danielle’s farm) in Millbrook, NY. Danielle and Jon will send out an email with the address and detailed directions, arrival details and such before September 20th. The AI Workshop will most likely be off-site at another venue a few minutes from the farm.
-
Laparoscopic AI is a minor surgical procedure that places semen directly into the uterus using a scope through small abdominal incisions, offering higher conception rates, especially with poorer quality semen. The doe is sedated during this procedure.
Transcervical AI has been the traditional method of artificial insemination for dairy goats and involves guiding an AI gun through the cervix to deposit semen directly into the uterus, typically done with the doe standing on a milk stand. -
We will send out protocols for synching your does to get them to ovulate at the correct time for their procedure in a few days.
You will need PG600, Estrumate or Lutalyse and a CIDR to bring your does in correctly. Danielle does have a few extra CIDRs and is happy to help insert or instruct on inserting if you need assistance.
-
Yes, although each doe must be registered for planning/scheduling purposes.
You can also bring does to Lap AI and others to transcervically AI if you are interested in participating in the whole day. -
As a reminder, here are a few key factors to help maximize your chances of successful pregnancies:
Condition matters: Ensuring your does are in excellent health will give you the best shot at strong conception rates. We recommend trimming hooves within 1–2 months prior and keeping parasite loads low.
Minimize stress: Maintaining a low-stress environment in the weeks leading up to and following AI is crucial.
Stick to the schedule: Precise timing is critical—please follow the attached protocol closely. Delays in pulling CIDRs or administering hormones have consistently led to poor outcomes, while those who stick to the schedule and reduce stress tend to see excellent results.
Fasting: All food and water must be withheld for a full 24 hours before the procedure. Once your does are awake from sedation, they can eat and drink again, so please have hay and water available for them immediately afterward.
-
For the health of animals attending as well as the host herd, we ask that all participating goats be CAE free with recent testing and healthy without signs of abcesses or contagious disease. If we see an animal that we do not feel comfortable having on the farm, we reserve the right to ask you to leave with no refund provided.
We will work to maintain a sanitary environment between herds as well to ensure animal health safety.
-
To maintain biosecurity practices, your goats will need to stay on your trailers until they are next up for a procedure. Please plan to be able to accommodate warm and cold weather, as September is often mercurial.
If you plan to participate in all parts of Repro Day, you may need to drive off-site for the lecture. We will have limited space available in cars, but you may be asked to unhook your trailer at the farm.
-
You are more than welcome to attend the Workshop and observe the hands-on transcervical AIs. There may be a doe to practice on, but that is not guaranteed.
The workshop starts with lunch at 12 pm and goes to 5.
-
If you have a buck in mind that you are looking to breed your doe to, you are welcome to have semen shipped to Danielle to be stored for Repro Day. She is not responsible for any issues with handling or tank failure. If you purchase more straws than you plan to use on the day, storage fees will apply. If you need to ship to Danielle, please reach out to her to give her advance notice and obtain her mailing address.
She also has limited Nubian semen available to purchase. Send her a text or email to coordinate.
REGISTRATION
For organizational purposes, once you select register, a pop-up form will appear. Please register each doe individually to help us keep track of does and breeds.
You will receive a sync protocol for your does, and straw motility will be assessed before insemination via ISperm Analysis. Pricing does not include hormones. If you need help getting hormone therapies, don't hesitate to get in touch with Dr. Melissa Holahan to assist.
The number of does we can accommodate to AI is limited, so please register each doe you are looking to AI.
From 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, join us for a seminar on Transcervical AI, which will include a brief introduction to Laparoscopic AI and IVF. This session will cover the techniques, benefits, and practical applications of each method.
From 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, participants will receive hands-on training in Transcervical AI, including live insemination practice with guidance and support.
If you are looking to get your does transcervically AI’ed, you can also register for that as well here.
The number of does we can accommodate to AI is limited, so please register each doe you are looking to AI.
All LAP AI participants will receive a basic in-clinic assessment of a straw’s semen quality via an iSperm Semen Analysis. If you wish to receive a copy for your records, Dr. Holahan can send you an emailed digital report as well.
